LABUAN BAJO<\/strong> – You can fly halfway across the world, book a boat, wake up at 4am, and still be told you\u2019re not allowed to climb one of Indonesia\u2019s most iconic viewpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s exactly what happened this weekend on Padar Island<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it says less about tourists behaving badly, and more about a system that still doesn\u2019t know how to handle its own success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happened<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday, dozens of foreign tourists were turned away at Padar Island in Komodo National Park after the daily quota of 1,000 visitors had already been reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some had already arrived at the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some had paid for tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of that mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t know we needed a separate ticket. No one explained it clearly,\u201d said one Australian visitor, who had booked a full-day Komodo tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What This Reveals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia wants to limit overtourism in Komodo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That part makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is not the quota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is everything around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
