Police are investigating after a Russian expatriate reported being held captive for more than a day and allegedly assaulted in an apparent attempt to gain access to his cryptocurrency accounts.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BADUNG, Bali<\/strong> \u2014 Bali Police have launched an investigation after a Russian national reported being kidnapped, assaulted and allegedly forced to reveal access to his cryptocurrency accounts during a 30-hour ordeal in southern Bali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victim, identified by his initials AI<\/strong>, 41, told investigators he was abducted on the evening of 2 July<\/strong> while returning home from work at a restaurant in Badung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to police, AI was driving along Jalan Uluwatu<\/strong> at around 9:35 p.m.<\/strong> when a black vehicle blocked his path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two masked men reportedly forced him into the vehicle, restrained his hands with plastic handcuffs and covered his head before taking him to an unknown location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The two masked perpetrators handcuffed the victim using plastic restraints and covered his head,” Bali Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Ariasandy<\/strong> said in a statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI told investigators he was taken to what he described as a second-floor room resembling a detention cell, where he was held against his will for approximately 30 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During that time, he alleged he was repeatedly punched and kicked while his captors demanded access to his cryptocurrency accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the police report, the suspects also took the victim’s mobile phone and the keys to his villa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victim further claimed the group later entered his residence and seized another phone that contained passwords linked to his cryptocurrency holdings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After more than a day in captivity, AI said he was abandoned near Udayana University Hospital<\/strong> in Jimbaran<\/strong> at around 4 a.m. on 4 July<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He immediately sought emergency medical treatment at the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police confirmed the victim received medical care after the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities have not disclosed whether any cryptocurrency or digital assets were ultimately stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators are currently analysing mobile phone location data, reviewing CCTV footage from the area where the alleged abduction occurred and collecting additional evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n

“So far, the case remains under investigation. We will provide further updates as the investigation progresses,” Ariasandy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reported kidnapping comes as Bali continues to attract a growing international community, including entrepreneurs, remote workers and cryptocurrency investors drawn by the island’s lifestyle and expanding digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cybersecurity experts have increasingly warned that criminals around the world are targeting individuals believed to hold significant cryptocurrency assets, with some attacks escalating beyond online fraud into physical extortion and kidnapping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At this stage, however, Indonesian authorities have not indicated whether the incident is connected to organised crime or whether the victim was specifically targeted because of his cryptocurrency holdings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police have urged the public to await the outcome of the investigation before drawing conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, the case remains an allegation under active investigation, with detectives working to identify the suspects and establish exactly what happened during the victim’s reported captivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
