NUSA PENIDA, Bali<\/strong> \u2014 What began as a late-night drink at one of Nusa Penida’s popular bars quickly turned into a cross-island police search that ended with a British tourist hiding in dense hillside vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within hours of receiving a theft report from a French visitor<\/a>, Bali police had identified a suspect, tracked his movements through credit card transactions and arrested him after he allegedly attempted to escape into the hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s how the investigation unfolded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Night Out Ends With a Missing Bag<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The incident began at around 3 a.m. on Sunday<\/strong>, when a 52-year-old French tourist<\/strong> was spending the evening at Drift Bar<\/strong> in the village of Ped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police say the victim was unaware that his shoulder bag had allegedly been searched and valuables removed while the venue was busy with customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The theft only became apparent later that morning after the tourist received unexpected notifications showing transactions made using his credit card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Realizing something was wrong, he checked his belongings and discovered several items were missing before reporting the incident to Nusa Penida Police<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital Clues Point to the Suspect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Investigators immediately began tracing the victim’s stolen credit card activity while gathering witness statements from the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to police, the investigation quickly led officers to a 26-year-old British tourist<\/strong>, identified only by the initials MAO<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than leaving the island, authorities said the suspect was still in Nusa Penida when officers moved to arrest him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Chase Into the Hills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Police say MAO spotted officers approaching and attempted to flee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of surrendering, he allegedly ran toward the rugged slopes of Bukit Linggar<\/strong>, an area covered by thick vegetation overlooking parts of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officers launched a coordinated search through the hillside, combing dense bushes and uneven terrain in an effort to locate the suspect before he could disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Nusa Penida Police Chief I Ketut Kesuma Jaya<\/strong>, the search ended after officers discovered the suspect hiding among the vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The suspect attempted to escape into the hills, but our officers successfully located and arrested him,” Kesuma Jaya said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Property Recovered<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Police said they recovered several items believed to belong to the French tourist, including cash, an iPhone 8<\/strong>, a power bank, a phone charger and the victim’s shoulder bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British national is now being questioned by investigators as the criminal investigation continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
