Prosecutors asked the panel of judges to formally find the defendant guilty of receiving or acting as an intermediary in cocaine distribution.

The Prosecution’s Case

“We request that the panel of judges sentence defendant Baath Jarnail Singh to 10 years in prison, minus time already served in detention,” the prosecutor said.

Prosecutors argued the defendant’s actions violated Article 114, Paragraph (2) of Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics, in conjunction with Article 604, Paragraph (2), letter a, of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, as adjusted under Law Number 1 of 2016 concerning Criminal Adjustments.

Beyond imprisonment, prosecutors also requested a fine of Rp 1 billion (approximately $65,000), with an additional six-month prison sentence to be served in place of the fine if it isn’t paid.

How the Arrest Unfolded

The case began when Baath Jarnail Singh was arrested by Denpasar Police’s Narcotics Investigation Unit in room number 11 of The Legian Mas Beach Inn, Legian, Kuta, Badung, on February 14. The arrest followed intelligence indicating a foreign national’s suspected involvement in an international narcotics distribution network.

Acting on that information, officers conducted surveillance before raiding the location where the defendant was staying. Police discovered five packages containing cocaine, with a combined net weight of 1,419.79 grams, stored inside the defendant’s bags and suitcase.

Beyond the narcotics themselves, officers seized additional evidence, including two electronic scales, two mobile phones, and equipment believed to be related to storing and packaging the illegal substance.

Forensic Confirmation

According to laboratory testing conducted by Bali Regional Police’s Forensic Laboratory, all seized evidence tested positive for cocaine, classified as a Category I narcotic under Indonesian law. Urine testing on the defendant also detected Ecgonine Methyl Ester, a metabolite produced when cocaine is used.

The Defendant’s Account

During trial proceedings, the defendant stated he had traveled to Bali on the instructions of an individual identified by the initials MIC, who remains on Indonesia’s wanted persons list.

Baath said he had been asked to receive and store the cocaine packages before they would eventually be collected by a man named Muhammad Ali. In exchange for this role, he said he received Rp 10 million (approximately $650) in cash, used to cover his living expenses while holding the drugs.

Additionally, the defendant said he received funds from MIC totaling 2,000 Hong Kong dollars per transfer, sent between eight and ten separate times.

What’s Next

Proceedings in the case will continue next week, with the defense expected to present its closing arguments (pleidoi) on behalf of the defendant.

Why This Case Matters for Bali’s International Community

For expats and travelers navigating life on an island where casual drug use is sometimes mistakenly assumed to carry lenient consequences, this case underscores how seriously Indonesian authorities treat narcotics trafficking, regardless of nationality. Indonesia’s drug laws remain among the strictest in the world, and Bali’s tourist-heavy hotels and inns, precisely the kind of accommodation used in this case, have increasingly come under scrutiny as potential logistics points for international trafficking networks operating through the island. For anyone approached with offers involving unusual payment structures for simply “holding” or “storing” items during their stay, this case is a stark illustration of how quickly such arrangements can escalate into serious criminal liability.

A British national has been handed a 10-year prison recommendation by prosecutors in Denpasar, in a case that traces back to a hotel room in Legian where police uncovered nearly a kilogram and a half of cocaine hidden in his luggage.
