HEYBALI<\/strong> – He came to Bali chasing job opportunities and new friendships. Instead, a Nigerian national identified as IO ended up deported, and in a twist that makes the case unusual, immigration authorities did not catch him through a routine sweep. His own friend turned him in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IO was formally deported after officials confirmed he had overstayed his visa in Indonesia by 93 days, in a case jointly handled by the Ngurah Rai Immigration<\/a> Office and Kuta Police Sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entered Through Jakarta, Settled Into Canggu<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

IO first arrived in Indonesia on November 17, 2025, entering through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta on a Visit Visa. His permit was valid through May 15, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From there, he moved between various temporary accommodations around Canggu, one of Bali’s most popular areas for long-term foreign residents. According to his own account to authorities, his time in Bali followed a fairly relaxed rhythm, beach visits, caf\u00e9 hangouts, and an ongoing effort to build a social circle on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem began once his permit expired on May 15, 2026. Rather than extending his visa or leaving the country, IO simply continued living in Bali without any valid immigration status, a decision that would eventually catch up with him three months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Familiar Excuse: Not Enough Money to Fly Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

IO told officials his reason for staying was straightforward: he no longer had enough money to buy a return ticket to Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a scenario immigration officials in Bali encounter with some regularity. Visitors arrive with plans for a holiday or new opportunities, but once funds run low, many choose to quietly remain rather than formally arrange their departure, a decision that transforms a manageable situation into an escalating legal violation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Novyandri, head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, was direct about where Indonesian law stands on that reasoning. “A residence permit represents a deadline that every foreign national must comply with while in Indonesian territory. Once that permit expires, the individual is obligated to either leave the country immediately or extend their permit according to applicable regulations. Financial limitations do not eliminate that obligation,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Case That Broke Open Because of a Friend’s Report<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What sets this case apart is how it came to light. IO’s overstaying status only surfaced after a friend of his filed a report with police on August 13, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting on that report, Kuta Police Sector took IO into custody and handed him over to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office on August 16, 2026, for further processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following investigation, immigration authorities issued an Immigration Administrative Action in the form of deportation. IO has also been proposed for inclusion on Indonesia’s entry ban list, a designation that would likely prevent him from returning to the country for a significant period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deported Via Doha, Bound for Lagos<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

IO was deported by the Ngurah Rai Immigration Intelligence and Enforcement Team on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, departing on a Qatar Airways flight from Denpasar to Doha, before continuing on to Lagos, Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Novyandri emphasized that enforcement actions like this one will continue as part of the office’s broader commitment to keeping Bali a safe and orderly tourist destination. “We will continue monitoring and taking firm action against foreign nationals who violate immigration regulations,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What This Means for Bali’s Foreign Community<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For long-term visitors and expats navigating Indonesia’s visa system<\/a>, IO’s case offers a pointed reminder on two fronts.
