HEYBALI<\/strong> – Lakey Beach in Dompu has long drawn international surfers chasing some of Indonesia’s best waves. On Monday evening, that reputation took a darker turn when a 25-year-old Italian tourist became the victim of a sexual assault that ended with fellow travelers and local residents chasing the suspect down before police even arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspect, identified by police only by his initials AI, a resident of Monggo Village in nearby Bima, was arrested the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Sudden Assault at the Water’s Edge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hu’u Police Chief, Iptu Ade Helmi, confirmed the arrest when reached for comment Tuesday, August 25. “Yes, we have successfully apprehended the perpetrator,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Helmi, the suspect approached the victim while she was standing near the shoreline. Once close enough, he groped her and touched other parts of her body before fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The suspect is alleged to have committed an indecent act by touching the victim’s body,” Helmi explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bystanders Didn’t Wait for Police to Act<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What sets this case apart is what happened in the moments immediately after the assault. A fellow foreign tourist who witnessed the incident joined local residents in chasing down the suspect before he could get far. The group caught him near the beach, where he reportedly apologized for what he had done, right there on the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That kind of rapid, collective response, tourists and locals acting together within moments of witnessing an assault, offers a striking picture of how quickly a beach community can mobilize when something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Report Filed Alongside a Fellow Traveler<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Following the incident, the victim filed a formal report at Hu’u Police Station, accompanied by a fellow traveler, a Czech national<\/a>. In her statement, she detailed the sequence of events along with a description of the suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting on that report, officers moved quickly to the scene. By around 3:30 p.m. local time, they located the suspect swimming casually near the shore, apparently unaware he was already being sought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Officers found the suspect at the beach, swimming, and were able to make the arrest,” Helmi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suspect Now in Custody at District Police Headquarters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After his arrest, the suspect was first taken to Hu’u Police Station for initial questioning before being transferred to Dompu District Police Headquarters, where the case will continue to be processed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
