BADUNG, Bali — An Australian national has died while being held at an immigration detention facility in Bali, prompting an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and raising questions about detainee welfare inside Indonesia’s immigration system.
The 39-year-old Australian, identified by his initials CJMH, was found unconscious inside a restroom at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Detention Centre (Rudenim) in Jimbaran, Badung, on Friday evening.
According to preliminary information, detention officers became concerned after the man failed to return from the restroom for an extended period.
When they entered, they found him unconscious. Officers immediately administered first aid before an ambulance transported him to Bali Jimbaran Hospital.
Although medical personnel initially detected signs of life, he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time.
Authorities have not yet announced an official cause of death.
Immigration spokesperson Husnan said investigators are examining every aspect of the incident, including the sequence of events leading up to the Australian’s death.
“Authorities are still investigating the entire incident, including all possible factors. A medical examination is currently underway, and an official statement will be released later,” Husnan said.
The case has also drawn attention to monitoring procedures inside the detention facility.
According to information gathered by Hey Bali News, CCTV footage shows the detainee entered the restroom at approximately 4:52 p.m., with officers later discovering he remained inside longer than expected.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.
CJMH had reportedly been placed in immigration detention while awaiting deportation after being accused of overstaying and violating the conditions of his Indonesian stay permit.
Initial medical observations reportedly identified marks around the neck as well as minor abrasions on one hand, although medical personnel indicated the abrasions were not considered the cause of death.
Doctors also noted the Australian had a history of heart disease and skin problems affecting both legs. Preliminary clinical assessments, including an electrocardiogram (ECG), reportedly suggested a possible cardiac event associated with his existing medical condition.
Authorities have not confirmed whether those findings explain the death, and further examination is expected before a final conclusion is announced.
Police and immigration officers have secured the scene, collected evidence, and questioned witnesses.
The body has since been transferred to Udayana University Hospital for further examination.
The incident is likely to receive close attention in both Indonesia and Australia, particularly as it occurred while the Australian citizen was under government custody awaiting deportation.
Until investigators complete their work, officials have urged the public not to speculate about the cause of death.
