BADUNG, Bali — Indonesian police are investigating the death of a 46-year-old Canadian national who was found unresponsive inside a private villa in Bali’s Jimbaran area earlier this week.
Authorities said the man, identified by his initials AJK, was discovered on Monday afternoon after friends became concerned when they were unable to reach him for several hours.
According to Bali Police spokesperson Ariasandy, officers received a report at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time after one of the man’s friends entered the villa and found him deceased.
Police said preliminary findings suggest the death may have been self-inflicted, but emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing while forensic examinations are completed.
Crime scene investigators from Denpasar Police, Bali Regional Police, and the provincial forensic laboratory examined the villa as part of efforts to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
Concern Grew After Repeated Calls Went Unanswered
Investigators said a friend of the deceased had attempted to contact him repeatedly throughout the morning but received no response to phone calls or text messages.
The friend initially asked an employee to check on the Canadian national.
When no one answered the door, the friend later went to the villa personally and eventually gained access to the property, where the man was found unresponsive.
Police said the discovery was immediately reported to authorities.
During interviews with investigators, the friend also told police that the Canadian national had previously asked him to contact his mother if anything unexpected happened to him.
Authorities confirmed that the family has since been notified.
Police Interview Witnesses
As part of the investigation, detectives have interviewed several witnesses, including friends, neighboring residents, and security personnel working near the villa.
According to police, none of the witnesses reported hearing any disturbance or suspicious activity before the man was found.
Investigators believe the Canadian national was last seen entering the villa on Sunday afternoon, approximately one day before his body was discovered.
Officials have not announced a final determination regarding the cause of death, pending the completion of forensic examinations and the ongoing police investigation.
A Reminder That Well-Being Matters Abroad
Bali welcomes millions of international visitors each year and is home to a large community of expatriates, retirees, and remote workers.
Mental health professionals note that living overseas can bring unique pressures, including social isolation, financial stress, and being far from family or familiar support networks.
While the circumstances of this case remain under investigation, authorities urge the public to avoid speculation and to respect the privacy of the deceased and his family.
Anyone experiencing emotional distress or concerned about someone they know is encouraged to seek support from trusted friends, family members, local healthcare providers, or mental health professionals. Early support can make a meaningful difference.
