Swimmer’s Ear in Bali: How to Treat and Prevent It While Enjoying the Ocean

Swimmer’s Ear in Bali: How to Treat and Prevent It While Enjoying the Ocean

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on Whatsapp

Ear infection Bali – Hey Bali ocean lovers! That itchy, painful feeling after a surf session in Uluwatu or snorkeling in Amed? You might have swimmer’s ear in Bali – a common but annoying tropical souvenir. Here’s how to prevent and treat it like a pro.

What is Swimmer’s Ear in Bali?

Swimmer’s ear in Bali (aka otitis externa) isn’t just water stuck in your ear – it’s a bacterial or fungal infection thriving in Bali’s warm, humid climate. As physician assistant Ryan Logan explains:

“It’s not the water itself, but the microbes in moist environments that cause trouble.”

Spot the Signs: Swimmer’s Ear Symptoms

If you’ve got swimmer’s ear in Bali, watch for:

  • Ear pain when tugging your earlobe
  • Fluid drainage (sometimes smelly)
  • Muffled hearing like you’re underwater (ironic, right?)
  • Redness/itching deep in the ear canal

Why Bali’s Waters Love to Cause Swimmer’s Ear

The same things that make Bali magical also raise your risk:

  1. Ocean microbes in surf spots like Kuta/Seminyak after rain
  2. Humidity slowing natural ear drying
  3. Q-tip overuse stripping protective ear wax
  4. River runoff near surf breaks (avoid paddling near gutters!)

Pro Tip: Sanur’s calm waters? Safer. Canggu’s rainy-season surf? Bacteria party.

5 Ways to Prevent Swimmer’s Ear in Bali

1. Dry Like a Local – Ear infection Bali

After surfing/snorkeling:

  • Tilt your head + hop on one foot to drain water
  • Use a hairdryer on cool setting 12” from your ear

2. Ditch the Q-Tips – Ear infection Bali

Bali pharmacies sell ear drops (like Aqua Ear) that acidify your ear canal – bacteria hate that.

3. Invest in Surf Earplugs – Ear infection Bali

“My Doc’s Pro Plugs saved my ears during 6 months of Uluwatu barrels.” – Jake, Aussie surfer

4. Avoid Post-Rain Swims – Ear infection Bali

River mouths = bacterial highways after storms. Check @BaliWaterQuality on IG for updates.

5. DIY Prevention Spray– Ear infection Bali

Mix 1:1 white vinegar + rubbing alcohol (a drop post-swim kills microbes).

When to Visit a Bali Clinic

Ear Infection Bali: Causes, Symptoms & Best Treatment for Swimmer’s Ear
Ear Infection Bali : Causes, Symptoms & Best Treatment for Swimmer’s Ear

Seek help if you have:

  • Throbbing pain that keeps you up at night
  • Swollen lymph nodes (ouch!)
  • Fever (means infection’s spreading)

Bali’s Best ENT Clinics:

  • BIMC Kuta (24/7 emergency care)
  • Kasih Ibu Hospital (Denpasar) – Affordable + English-speaking docs
  • Ubud Clinic – Holistic options like garlic oil treatments

Travel insurance hack: Ensure your policy covers outpatient ENT visits – many exclude “preventable” issues.

Nomad-Approved Treatments – Ear infection Bali

  • Mild cases: Otodex ear drops (available at Guardian Pharmacy)
  • Severe cases: Prescription antibiotic drops (Ciprofloxacin)
  • Surfer hack: Sleep on your good ear + use a warm compress

“Bali’s waters giveth stoke, and taketh away with ear infections. Prep wisely!” – Sarah, Canadian digital nomad

Final Thought: Don’t Let Ear Pain Wreck Your Bali Vibes

Swimmer’s ear in Bali is 100% preventable. Pack earplugs, dry properly, and know where to get help. Because nothing kills island joy faster than an earache during sunset beers at The Lawn.

Need a doctor now? Save these numbers:

  • BIMC Emergency: +62 361 761263
  • Bali Medical Help (English hotline): +62 812 3636 9111

Stay safe out there – the waves (and your ears) will thank you!

  • A viral video posted on December 20, 2025, has drawn renewed attention to street safety in one of Bali’s most popular areas. The footage shows a Russian national targeted in a daylight snatch attempt while walking through Canggu. Captured on CCTV and followed by the victim’s own emotional recording, the video documents the moment a motorcycle rider approached from behind and attempted to grab her phone. The attempt failed when the device slipped and shattered on the road, but the impact went far beyond physical damage. In her follow-up video, the victim appears visibly shaken, saying she no longer feels safe walking in Bali. While her phone was not stolen, the psychological toll was immediate and profound. The incident has since sparked intense discussion among tourists, expats, and long-term residents about pedestrian safety in areas long perceived as vibrant and secure. Canggu has become a global hub for digital nomads and travelers, but rapid growth, congestion, and crowded streets have also created new challenges. This incident serves as a reminder that public safety remains a shared responsibility, and that trust in a destination is built not only on beauty and culture, but on how safe people feel in their daily movements. 🔗 Full story:
