A 35-year-old woman was discovered outside her rental home on the island, with local police investigating the circumstances.
GILI AIR, Lombok — A 35-year-old French national was found deceased outside her rental home on the island of Gili Air, North Lombok, on Saturday morning, January 10, 2026. While initial indications suggest a suicide, authorities stated the investigation is ongoing to determine the definitive cause and circumstances of her death.
The woman, identified by her initials L.N., was discovered by a fellow French national, Patrick Gatel Pascal Honore, after he received a call from a mutual friend concerned about her welfare. Arriving at her cottage around 7:00 AM local time, he found her body.
Local resident Mahdan, working on a nearby project, heard calls for help and assisted in cutting the rope and lowering the body. The incident was subsequently reported to the village head and then to the North Lombok Police.
Iptu I Komang Wilandra, head of criminal investigations for the North Lombok Police, confirmed that officers have processed the scene, collected evidence, and are interviewing witnesses.
“The initial results point towards a suspicion of suicide. However, investigators are still conducting further examinations to confirm the sequence of events and the background,” Wilandra stated.
The case has brought a somber note to the small, tourism-dependent island known for its relaxed atmosphere. For the international community of long-term visitors and expatriates across Indonesia, the tragedy is a stark reminder of the isolation and mental health challenges that can accompany life abroad, even in idyllic settings.
Authorities have not released further details pending the investigation and notification of next of kin.
