JEMBRANA, Bali – A sudden and violent weather event struck the Jembrana Regency in West Bali on Tuesday night, as tornado-like waterspouts spun ashore from the sea, damaging three buildings and causing an estimated 13 million Indonesian Rupiah (approx. $850 USD) in losses. The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of the current tropical wet season, prompting urgent safety advisories for residents and visitors alike.
The extreme weather, occurring around 6:30 PM local time in the Banjar Tembles area of Penyaringan Village, Mendoyo District, was confirmed by the Jembrana Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). According to eyewitness accounts from local shrimp farm employees, three distinct waterspouts formed over the ocean before moving inland—two from the west and one from the east.
“The incident was caused by extreme weather. Despite the overcast conditions, the formation was sudden,” stated Putu Agus Artana, Head of the Jembrana BPBD, in a report by IDN Times. He further detailed that the waterspouts originated from the sea, a phenomenon that can occur during periods of atmospheric instability even without the presence of a full storm.
Rapid Assessment Reveals Damage
A rapid assessment team was dispatched to the scene, confirming structural damage to a private residence and two businesses—the Aquatera shrimp farm and PT Suri Tani Pemuka. The most severe impact was to roofing materials across the sites. Miraculously, no injuries or fatalities were reported, with one homeowner having safely self-evacuated to a relative’s residence prior to the worst of the damage.
Community Response and “Gotong Royong”

In a swift response, the Regent (Bupati) of Jembrana mobilized a coordinated effort involving the BPBD, local village and district officials, and military and police units. A community clean-up, embodying the Balinese spirit of “gotong royong” (mutual cooperation), was scheduled for Wednesday morning. Immediate aid, including tarpaulins for temporary shelter, was provided to the affected resident.
The BPBD has identified an urgent need for more tarpaulins and basic food supplies for the impacted families and continues to monitor the situation.
Editorial Note & Critical Safety Advisory for Tourists and Expatriates
This event serves as a critical reminder of the dynamic and occasionally severe weather patterns that can occur in tropical Indonesia, especially during the rainy season (typically October-April). While Bali is synonymous with paradise, its weather demands respect and preparedness.
For our global readers, tourists, and expatriates currently in Bali or planning a visit, Hey Bali News urges heightened awareness:
- Stay Informed: Regularly check reliable local weather sources and heed warnings from the BMKG (Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency) and local authorities. Sudden storms can develop quickly.
- Understand the Risks: The current season can bring not only heavy rain but also the potential for strong winds, waterspouts, and localized flooding. What begins as a calm, overcast day can change rapidly.
- Prioritize Safety: If a severe weather warning is issued or you observe suddenly darkening skies, strong gusty winds, or a funnel cloud, seek solid shelter immediately. Avoid beach areas, open fields, and elevated structures. Do not attempt to watch or photograph the event from an exposed location.
- Have a Plan: Know the emergency protocols at your accommodation. Keep essential items like a flashlight, phone charger, and water easily accessible.
The prompt, community-driven response in Jembrana highlights local resilience. However, personal vigilance is the first and most crucial line of defense. Enjoy the beauty of Bali, but always prioritize your safety by respecting the power of its natural elements.
