A close call at one of Bali’s most photographed cliffs underscores the hidden dangers of its iconic coastlines, even in seemingly calm weather.
NUSA PENIDA, Bali — A Czech tourist experienced a harrowing escape on Friday after being swept away by a powerful wave at Kelingking Beach, a dramatic coastal formation on Nusa Penida known for its Instagram-famous cliffside views. The prompt action of on-site lifeguards prevented the incident from becoming a tragedy.
The tourist, identified as Martello Romani, 49, was reportedly caught by a sudden, large wave while near the water’s edge. Despite clear weather conditions, authorities noted the sea swell in the area was significant and unpredictable.
“Suddenly, a large wave came and swept the victim, causing him to fall and experience an emergency,” explained Nusa Penida Police Chief, Commissioner I Ketut Kesuma Jaya.
Crucially, the incident was witnessed by lifeguards stationed at the beach. They immediately evacuated Romani to the shore and administered first aid with assistance from local residents. The response was coordinated with the Nusa Penida Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) and local police for further evacuation. By approximately 6:00 PM local time, Romani was successfully transported out of the remote beach area located in Bunga Mekar Village.
He was subsequently taken to the Griya Medika Clinic for medical assessment and treatment. Authorities confirmed he survived the ordeal.

The event serves as a stark reminder of the potent natural forces at play along Bali’s coastlines, particularly at exposed locations like Kelingking. The beach, while visually stunning from the clifftop viewpoint, is notoriously difficult to access and is known for its strong currents and dangerous shore breaks, even when skies are clear.
Police Chief Kesuma Jaya reiterated standard safety advice, urging all visitors to heed safety warnings, carefully observe ocean conditions, and avoid getting too close to the water’s edge, especially at locations with a reputation for large, unpredictable waves.
