BULELENG, Bali — A man was seriously injured in a sword attack during Nyepi in North Bali, in an incident that disrupted the island’s annual Day of Silence, when all outdoor activity is expected to cease.

The incident occurred in Banjar Dinas Kajanan, Joanyar Village, Seririt District. The victim, Kadek Sastrawan, 43, sustained deep wounds to his back and was taken to Buleleng Regional Hospital for treatment.

Police have arrested the suspect, Komang Agus Sudiartawan, 28, and seized the weapon used in the attack, described as a samurai-style sword.

“A criminal assault occurred in the Banjar Dinas Kajanan area,” said Buleleng Police spokesperson Iptu Yohana Rosalin Diaz on Friday. “The suspect has been secured along with the evidence, and the case is being handled by Seririt Police.”

Incident Began With Drinking Session

According to police, the incident began earlier that morning when the victim invited the suspect to his home via WhatsApp.

At around 9:30 a.m., the suspect arrived, where several individuals had gathered. Police said alcohol was being consumed at the location, despite Nyepi restrictions.

An argument later broke out between the two men, reportedly triggered by remarks made during the gathering. Witnesses attempted to calm the situation, and the suspect was eventually asked to leave.

As he departed, the victim allegedly threw a chair in his direction and threatened him with a bottle, according to police accounts.

Suspect Returned With Weapon

Shortly after leaving, the suspect returned to the location carrying a sword.

Police said he then struck the victim once across the back, causing serious injuries.

Residents nearby intervened and were able to stop the attack before it escalated further. The victim was transported to hospital, while police responded to the scene and took the suspect into custody.

Nyepi Context

Nyepi is one of Bali’s most important religious observances, marked by 24 hours of silence, with no travel, work, or outdoor activity permitted. The day is intended for reflection and spiritual observance.

Authorities noted that gatherings involving alcohol and public disturbances run counter to the principles observed during Nyepi.

Investigation Ongoing

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident. The sword has been secured as key evidence, and the suspect is expected to face charges related to assault with a weapon under Indonesian law.

The victim remains under medical care.
