Police in Bali are hunting a suspect who allegedly opened fire inside a bar in the tourist hotspot of Canggu, North Kuta District, Badung, injuring two people with a single bullet. Authorities say the shooter has since fled the island.
“We are pursuing the perpetrator of this shooting. Officers on the ground have already cordoned off the crime scene,” said Badung Police Chief AKBP Joseph Edward Purba on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
How the Shooting Unfolded
The incident took place at The Shady Pig on Jalan Pantai Berawa, Canggu, North Kuta District, Badung Regency, at approximately 2:50am on Friday, July 17, 2026. According to police, the shooting began when a bar security guard, identified by his initials IMYM, 32, attempted to break up an altercation between the suspect and a Chinese national identified by his initials EA, 25.
“Initially there was an altercation between the suspect and the foreign tourist. The security guard then intervened, positioning himself directly in front of the second victim at very close proximity. That’s when the perpetrator fired a shot, with the bullet passing through the security guard’s left thigh before lodging in the left thigh of the foreign national standing behind him,” Joseph said.
Investigation Underway
A joint team from Badung Police and North Kuta Police has been deployed to process the crime scene and question witnesses. Several witnesses have already been interviewed by investigators.
“The Criminal Investigation Unit and North Kuta Police have completed evidence-gathering at the scene and are analyzing CCTV footage. We have also submitted requests for medical examination reports (visum et repertum) from the hospitals treating both victims,” Joseph said.
In addition to witness interviews, officers secured several key pieces of evidence from the scene, including torn clothing stained with blood, a pair of black-and-white shoes with blood stains, a pair of black socks, a white t-shirt, two pairs of black jeans that had been cut and torn, and a piece of red checkered cloth.
“We have secured all of the victims’ clothing and one copper-colored bullet projectile as primary evidence. We are currently focused entirely on apprehending the perpetrator so the main motive behind this shooting can be uncovered as soon as possible,” Joseph concluded.
