What Makes Kelating Beach Special?
1. The Black Sand Phenomenon
Unlike Bali’s white beaches, Kelating’s sand is volcanic, formed by eroded lava from Mount Batukaru. Best time to see it sparkle? 10 AM–2 PM when the sun is overhead.
2. Surfing & Secret Freshwater Pool
- Waves: Consistent 4–6 ft breaks (ideal for intermediate surfers). Rent boards from locals (~IDR 100K/hour) While Pantai Kelating’s waves attract surfers, no formal board rentals exist on-site. Experienced riders bring their own gear.
- Natural Pool: A surreal mix of freshwater and ocean, separated by a sandbar. Locals bathe here at dawn.
3. Sunset Rituals & Hidden Caves
At dusk, the beach transforms:
- Sunset Spot: Face west near the cliffside for unobstructed views.
- Bat Cave: A 10-minute walk south reveals a tiny shrine filled with hundreds of bats (bring a flashlight!).
Personal Note: I once met a fisherman here who shared legends about the cave’s guardian spirit—ask locals for stories!

Why Pantai Kelating Will Steal Your Heart
I’ve chased waves across Bali for a decade, but Pantai Kelating remains my best-kept secret. When dawn breaks and the volcanic sand glows like liquid obsidian, with only the symphony of crashing waves and roosters calling from coconut groves, you’ll understand why locals cherish this place.
Local’s Tip: Rub the black sand between your fingers—its metallic grit comes from Mount Batukaru’s ancient eruptions, making it sparkle like crushed diamonds underfoot!

✅ The Legend Behind Kelating Beach Black Sand
Bali is not only famous for its breathtaking landscapes but also for the legends that breathe life into them. Kelating Beach, with its shimmering black sands, holds one such tale—one that speaks of love, anger, and eternal beauty.
🌋 The Tale of Mount Batukaru and Dewi Laut
Long ago, the mighty volcano Mount Batukaru fell deeply in love with Dewi Laut, the goddess of the ocean. But Dewi Laut, bound by her duty to the waves, gently rejected Batukaru’s advances.
Heartbroken and enraged, Batukaru erupted with unimaginable force, hurling his molten heart into the sea. As the blazing heart collided with the crashing waves, it shattered into countless fragments, mixing with Dewi Laut’s tears.
The tears and ashes merged, transforming into the glittering black sands of Kelating Beach—an eternal symbol of love lost and rage cooled. To this day, it’s said that the sands shimmer most brilliantly at sunset, as if Batukaru’s passion still lingers.
🌙 Local Beliefs Today
Even now, villagers respect the legend. Some of their beliefs include:
- Never taking the sand home: It’s said to bring misfortune to relationships.
- Gold flecks on full moon nights: Locals believe this is Batukaru’s passion sparkling through the sand.
- Couples must hold hands at sunset: To prevent the jealous mountain from stirring the tides.
This captivating legend adds a layer of mystery to Kelating Beach, making it more than just a beautiful destination. It’s a place where nature and myth intertwine, waiting to be discovered by those with open hearts.
