KINTAMANI, Bali — High above Bali’s crowded beaches, where the air cools and the landscape opens into misty highlands, Lake Batur offers a different rhythm of travel. Here, the island slows down. And now, it floats.
A relatively new attraction known as Batur Aqua Ride is drawing visitors not with speed or spectacle, but with something quieter: the unusual experience of cycling across the surface of a volcanic lake.
It is, at first glance, simple. A bicycle. A body of water. But the combination transforms a familiar motion into something unexpectedly immersive.
A Lake Shaped by Fire, Now a Place for Play
Lake Batur, formed by ancient volcanic activity from Mount Batur, has long been one of Bali’s most iconic natural landscapes. Surrounded by mountains and often veiled in soft morning fog, it offers a sense of scale that feels far removed from the island’s southern coast.
Batur Aqua Ride builds on that setting—not by altering it, but by allowing visitors to move through it.
Using specially designed floating bicycles, riders pedal across the lake’s surface, guided by buoyant structures that keep the experience stable and accessible. The mechanics are intuitive: pedal forward to move, backward to slow or reverse. There are no brakes—only balance and rhythm.

Where It Is—and How to Get There
The attraction is located in Kedisan, Kintamani, along Jalan Trunyan in Bangli Regency—roughly a 2.5-hour drive from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.
The journey itself is part of the experience. Roads wind through Ubud or central Bangli before climbing toward Penelokan, where the first wide views of the lake appear. From there, a smaller road descends toward the lakeshore, where the activity begins.
Opening Hours, Pricing, and What’s Included
Batur Aqua Ride operates daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with early morning widely considered the best time to visit—when the air is cooler and the lake is at its calmest.
There are two types of floating bicycles available:
- Single ride (one person)
- Tandem ride (two people)
Pricing is structured differently for local and international visitors:
- Around IDR 100,000 for domestic visitors
- Around IDR 550,000 for international visitors
Each session lasts approximately one hour.
Basic facilities include:
- Storage space near the entrance
- A bottle of drinking water
- Mandatory life jackets
- Optional assistance from a guide for a small additional fee

The Experience: Quiet, Unusual, and Photogenic
Out on the water, the sensation is less about adrenaline and more about perspective.
The lake stretches outward, framed by Mount Batur and rolling hills that shift with light and weather. On calmer mornings, the surface reflects the sky in near-perfect symmetry. On windier days, the ride becomes more physical—requiring steady pedaling and control.
There are also rules that reflect both safety and preservation:
- No eating, drinking, or smoking while riding
- Activities pause during heavy rain or unstable weather
For many visitors, the appeal lies in its visual simplicity. The setting—open water, mountain backdrop, soft light—has made Batur Aqua Ride a growing favorite for photography and social media, without feeling overly staged.
What to Know Before You Go

For travelers planning a visit, a few practical considerations can make a difference:
- Go early for the best weather and light
- Wear comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for pedaling
- Bring a phone or camera with enough battery
- Stay calm in windy conditions—control comes from steady movement
- Follow all safety instructions and local guidelines
- Respect the environment by avoiding littering
A Different Kind of Bali
For those who know Bali primarily through its beaches, beach clubs, and traffic, Lake Batur offers a different narrative.
Batur Aqua Ride does not compete with the island’s more commercial attractions. Instead, it quietly expands what Bali can be: a place where even a familiar act—like riding a bicycle—can feel entirely new.
And in a destination defined by movement, there is something striking about gliding slowly across still water.
