The national meteorological authority warns of intense, potentially damaging rainfall and strong winds for a wide swath of Indonesia, urging public vigilance against floods and landslides.
JAKARTA — Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a severe weather alert for Thursday, January 22, 2026, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds across a significant portion of the archipelago. The warning places several major population centers and tourist destinations, including the entire island of Bali, on high alert for hydrometeorological hazards.

According to the latest forecast, the southern and central regions of Indonesia are expected to bear the brunt of the extreme conditions. The agency has categorized the following provinces as being at the highest risk, where “heavy to very heavy rain with strong winds” is anticipated:
- Bali
- Banten
- West Java
- East Java
- West Nusa Tenggara (NTB)
- East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)
- Special Capital Region of Jakarta (DKI Jakarta)
- Special Region of Yogyakarta (DI Yogyakarta)
- Lampung
Broader Regional Impact and Wind Warnings
A second tier of provinces is forecast to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with strong winds also expected in areas like South Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, and Maluku.
Separately, the BMKG issued a specific warning for strong winds in several other regions, including West Kalimantan, the Bangka Belitung Islands, the Riau Islands, and Papua. These areas face risks such as falling trees and structural damage even if rainfall intensity is lower.
Public Advisory and Call for Preparedness
The agency has emphasized the need for local governments and communities to remain on high alert for the potential impacts, which include flash floods, landslides, and lightning. The public is strongly advised to continuously monitor updates through official BMKG channels, as weather conditions can change rapidly.
This alert follows a pattern of intense seasonal weather affecting Indonesia and underscores the importance of preparedness during the peak of the rainy season, particularly for residents in flood-prone or landslide-susceptible areas.
