BADUNG, Bali — Nearly a week after a Dutch national was fatally stabbed outside a villa in Kerobokan, Indonesian police have identified two foreign nationals as suspects and initiated an international search, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn widespread attention.
Authorities say the two men, both Brazilian nationals, are believed to have left Indonesia shortly after the attack. Bali Police have requested Red Notices through Interpol in an effort to locate and provisionally detain the suspects abroad.
“Based on crime scene analysis, witness statements, and technological evidence, we have identified two individuals as suspects,” said Kombes I Gede Adhi Mulyawarman, director of general crimes at Bali Police. “Both are foreign nationals.”
A Fatal Attack in Kerobokan
The incident occurred on the night of March 23 in Banjar Anyar Kelod, Kerobokan, where a 49-year-old Dutch national, identified by his initials RP, was attacked outside a private villa.
According to police and witness accounts, the victim had been walking with his partner when they noticed two men on a motorcycle behaving suspiciously. The victim reportedly told his partner to return inside and secure the property.
Moments later, the two men allegedly approached and attacked him with a knife.
He sustained severe injuries and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Authorities have not disclosed a confirmed motive, and investigators are continuing to examine whether the attack was targeted or random.
Evidence and Identification
Police say the investigation progressed through a combination of witness testimony, CCTV footage, and forensic findings.
The motorcycle believed to have been used in the attack has been recovered. Investigators also reported what they describe as blood traces on the vehicle and visible on one of the suspects in surveillance footage.
“CCTV footage shows indications consistent with injuries sustained during the attack,” Adhi Mulyawarman said, referring to images reviewed by investigators.
Authorities have not released further forensic details, and the evidence has not yet been tested in court.
Suspects Believed to Have Left Indonesia
According to police, the two suspects departed Indonesia on March 24, one day after the attack.
Immigration records indicate they had entered the country legally in mid-February. Their activities during their stay remain under investigation.
With the suspects now believed to be overseas, Bali Police have escalated the case through international channels.
Interpol and the Global Search
Police have submitted a request for Red Notices through Interpol, a mechanism used to alert law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest individuals pending extradition.
Red Notices are not international arrest warrants, but they serve as formal requests for cooperation among member countries.
The suspects have also been placed on Indonesia’s most-wanted list.
“We have coordinated with Interpol to expand the search globally,” Adhi Mulyawarman said.
What the Case Highlights
The case has drawn attention not only for the violence of the attack, but also for the speed at which the suspects are believed to have left the country.
While cross-border movement is common in international destinations, such cases underscore the challenges authorities face in acting within narrow timeframes before suspects exit national jurisdictions.
Law enforcement officials note that such constraints are not unique to Indonesia, but are a broader feature of transnational crime investigations.
Implications for Bali’s International Community
Bali remains one of the world’s most visited destinations, and authorities emphasize that serious violent incidents remain relatively rare.
At the same time, the case highlights the role of international cooperation in modern policing, particularly in destinations with high volumes of foreign visitors.
The use of Interpol mechanisms signals that local investigations can extend beyond national borders, even when suspects are no longer within the country.
An Investigation Still Unfolding
For now, key questions remain unanswered, including the motive behind the attack and whether the victim had any prior connection to the suspects.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and that further developments will depend on international coordination efforts.
The suspects remain at large.
The Bottom Line
Two suspects have been identified. A global search is underway.
While authorities have moved quickly to advance the investigation, the case underscores a central challenge of modern law enforcement: in an era of rapid international mobility, the distance between a crime and accountability can extend far beyond borders.
