BADUNG, Bali — Police in Bali are intensifying a manhunt for two unidentified men believed to be behind the fatal stabbing of a Dutch national in Kerobokan, as new details from CCTV footage point to a targeted attack rather than a robbery.
Investigators say the suspects—one of whom was seen wearing a ride-hailing driver jacket—were captured on surveillance cameras moving repeatedly around the area shortly before the killing.
“We are currently pursuing two suspected perpetrators. CCTV shows them circling the location prior to the incident,” said Kompol I Ketut Agus Pasek Sudina, police chief of North Kuta, on Tuesday.
CCTV Trail and a Calculated Escape
According to police, the two men arrived on a scooter and were seen traveling together before and after the attack. The driver was wearing a black ride-hailing jacket, a black helmet, and a blue face mask. The passenger wore an orange T-shirt and no helmet.
The pair fled the scene immediately after the assault, prompting authorities to map their escape route using surveillance footage from surrounding streets.
The presence of disguising elements—helmet, mask, and recognizable uniform—has raised questions about whether the attackers intended to blend into Bali’s dense traffic and avoid detection.
A Violent Attack in Plain Sight
The attack took place at approximately 10:50 PM on Monday (March 23) outside a villa in Banjar Anyar Kelod, Kerobokan.
Witnesses reported hearing cries for help before seeing the two men flee while carrying a knife.
The victim, identified as 49-year-old Dutch national RP, was rushed to hospital by ambulance but was pronounced dead at 11:29 PM after suffering severe blood loss.
Police later recovered several pieces of evidence at the scene, including:
- a mobile phone
- a pair of glasses
- a detached knife blade believed to have been used in the attack
Robbery Ruled Out, Focus Shifts to Motive
One of the most significant developments in the investigation is what was not taken.
According to police, the victim’s personal belongings—including valuables—were left untouched at the scene.
This has led investigators to largely rule out robbery as a motive.
“Our strong indication is that this was not theft. We are investigating this as serious assault or premeditated murder,” Sudina said.
The absence of theft, combined with the suspects’ movements prior to the attack, is strengthening the theory that the victim may have been specifically targeted.
A Case That Raises Wider Questions
The use of a ride-hailing jacket—whether genuine or used as disguise—adds a new layer of complexity to the case.
Ride-hailing drivers are a common and trusted presence across Bali. The possibility that such an identity may have been used to approach or track the victim undetected is now part of the investigation.
For Bali’s international community, the case is no longer just about a violent incident—it is about intent, planning, and access.
What Police Are Doing Now
Authorities are:
- analyzing CCTV footage across multiple locations
- tracing the suspects’ motorcycle route
- collecting witness statements from residents and nearby businesses
- examining forensic evidence recovered at the scene
Police have not yet released the identities or nationalities of the suspects.
A Developing Case with High Stakes
This latest development deepens concerns surrounding the killing of a foreign national in one of Bali’s most active residential and tourist zones.
While violent crime remains rare on the island, cases involving targeted attacks—particularly those with elements of planning—carry wider implications for public perception and safety.
The Bottom Line
The killing of a Dutch tourist in Bali has entered a new phase—one defined not by uncertainty, but by a clearer pattern of intent.
Two suspects. A coordinated approach. No robbery.
What remains unanswered is why.
