HEYBALI – The savanna hills around Plataran Komodo Resort in Labuan Bajo are usually the kind of view guests photograph from their infinity pool. On Tuesday evening, that same landscape was on fire.
Flames on Bukit Plataran
The blaze broke out on open grassland in the hills of Bukit Plataran, right next to the Plataran Komodo Resort property, on the evening of August 18. Yeremias Ontong, head of the Municipal Police Unit (Satpol PP) in West Manggarai, confirmed the location that night.
Nine firefighters from the West Manggarai Satpol PP fire division responded, backed by two fire trucks. Crews worked to control the blaze quickly enough to stop it from spreading further across the dry, open terrain.
“The open land fire has been fully extinguished, and the spread of the fire was prevented,” Ontong said.
How Crews Kept It From Spreading
Once the visible flames were out, firefighters moved into a cooling phase, dousing the burned ground to bring down the temperature of any remaining hot material. That was followed by a mopping up phase, a careful sweep of the area to check for hidden embers that could reignite once crews left.
Only after the site was confirmed fully under control did personnel and equipment return to the fire station. Ontong confirmed there were no injuries or deaths, and that no homes, public facilities, or community infrastructure near the resort were damaged.
Why It’s Worth Knowing in a Dry Season Destination
Labuan Bajo’s savanna landscape, the same golden hills that make it one of Indonesia’s most photographed gateways to Komodo National Park, turns tinder dry during the dry season. Open land fires like this one are not unusual in the region at this time of year, and they can move fast across grass and scrub before crews arrive.
For travelers staying at properties built into these hillsides, the story is less about danger and more about how quickly local fire crews responded once the blaze was spotted. Nine personnel and two trucks were on scene fast enough to keep the fire contained to open land, away from guest facilities and nearby homes.
There is no indication the resort had to evacuate guests or suspend operations, and authorities have not announced any lasting damage to the area. What stands out is simply how ordinary this kind of incident has become in a region where dry hills sit right beside luxury infinity pools, and how much depends on how fast the response team gets there.
