BADUNG, Bali — Indonesian police have questioned five witnesses in the fatal stabbing of a Dutch national outside a villa in Bali, as investigators work to identify two suspects and determine whether the attack was random or deliberate.
The killing, which took place late Monday night in the Kerobokan area of North Kuta, has left authorities with few clear answers—and a growing sense of urgency.
“We have examined five witnesses so far, and the process will continue,” said Badung Police Chief Joseph Edward Purba on Wednesday. “However, detailed characteristics of the perpetrators are still being developed through our investigation.”
A Case Defined by Uncertainty
Nearly 48 hours after the attack, investigators say they have yet to establish the identities of the two men believed to be responsible.
Police are still working to determine whether the suspects are Indonesian nationals or foreign nationals—a distinction that could shape the direction of the investigation.
Efforts are now focused on reconstructing the victim’s final movements and examining his relationships in Bali, in search of any indication of prior conflict.
“We are optimizing witness examinations and looking into the victim’s close contacts to determine whether there were any previous issues,” Purba said. “We are also reviewing CCTV footage along the route near the crime scene.”
The Moments Before the Attack
According to police and witness accounts, the violence unfolded quickly.
The victim, identified by his initials RP, 49, had been walking near the villa with his partner when they noticed two men riding a scooter nearby.
Sensing something was wrong, he instructed his partner to return inside and lock the door.
She did not make it in time.
The two men approached and attacked the victim with a knife in front of the villa. His partner fled and hid nearby as the assault continued.
Witnesses described one suspect as wearing a ride-hailing jacket, a blue mask, and a helmet. The second suspect was dressed in an orange T-shirt.
A Fatal Outcome
The victim was taken to BIMC Hospital with multiple severe injuries, including deep wounds to the face, neck, shoulders, arms, and back.
He was pronounced dead at 11:29 p.m., with police citing extensive blood loss as the cause.
No Motive, No Connection
Despite ongoing interviews and evidence gathering, investigators say they have not yet identified any connection between the victim and the attackers.
“So far, we have not found any relationship or link between the victim and the suspected perpetrators,” Purba said. “We cannot yet conclude a motive because the suspects have not been identified.”
That absence of motive has become one of the most troubling aspects of the case.
Watching the Borders
Amid speculation that the suspects may have attempted to leave Indonesia, police say they have coordinated with immigration authorities to monitor movements at exit points.
However, no travel bans have been issued.
“We cannot confirm whether the suspects have fled the country,” Purba said. “We are coordinating closely with immigration, but preventive measures such as travel restrictions will only be applied once identities are confirmed.”
An Investigation Still Unfolding
For now, the case remains open—and defined as much by what is unknown as by what has been established.
Five witnesses. Two unidentified suspects. No clear motive.
In a place where violent crime is rare and often quickly resolved, the lack of answers has deepened the sense of unease.
And as investigators continue to piece together the events of that night, the central question remains unresolved: why was this man targeted?
