TABANAN, Bali — For years, much of Bali’s tourism growth has moved south.
Toward Canggu.
Toward Seminyak.
Toward busier roads, larger crowds, and increasingly expensive accommodation.
But many travelers are now looking elsewhere.
Tabanan, located west of Bali’s busiest tourism zones, is increasingly attracting visitors searching for cooler temperatures, quieter roads, larger landscapes, and a version of Bali that still feels slower.
From UNESCO rice terraces and hidden beaches to flower gardens and natural hot springs, here are eight places helping put Tabanan on more travelers’ itineraries.
1. Jatiluwih Rice Terrace
If there is one place that defines Tabanan, this is probably it.
The UNESCO recognized rice terraces stretch across hillsides on a scale that photographs rarely capture properly. Cooler temperatures, walking trails, and fewer crowds than many of Bali’s better known rice fields make this one of the easiest places on the island to slow down.

2. The Blooms Garden
Set against Bedugul’s cooler mountain climate, The Blooms Garden combines flower fields with family attractions including rabbit parks, ATV rides, and themed photography areas.
Morning visits generally offer clearer skies and cooler temperatures.

3. Secret Garden Village
Part architecture attraction, part coffee destination, part cultural experience.
Secret Garden Village combines educational exhibits with cafes, museums, herbal beauty experiences, and coffee tours in a single location.

4. Yeh Hoo Waterfall
Many Balinese waterfalls require steep descents and long walks.
Yeh Hoo is different.
Located close to Jatiluwih, the waterfall offers cool mountain water and relatively easy access, making it a convenient stop for travelers already exploring the surrounding rice terraces.

5. Soan Galuh Beach
Tabanan’s coastline looks very different from southern Bali.
Soan Galuh is one example.
The beach is known for its natural cave, rocky shoreline, and sunsets framed by cliffs and ocean views. Visitor numbers remain relatively low compared with better known beaches further south.

6. Kedungu Beach
Kedungu has gradually become one of western Bali’s most talked about coastal destinations.
Black volcanic sand, green cliffs, small waterfalls, and wide open views make it popular among photographers, surfers, and sunset seekers.

7. ESPA Yeh Panes Natural Hot Spring
Not every destination in Tabanan involves hiking or sightseeing.
Some are simply about slowing down.

Located within Bali’s UNESCO cultural landscape area, this temple remains quieter than many of the island’s more famous religious sites.
Visitors often come for melukat purification rituals, spiritual reflection, or simply to experience a less crowded side of Bali.

Why Travelers Are Looking West
The appeal of Tabanan is not that it replaces southern Bali.
It doesn’t.
People still come to Bali for Seminyak sunsets, Canggu cafes, and beach clubs.
But increasingly, travelers are also looking for something different.
Quieter roads.
Cooler weather.
More space.
The drive from southern Bali may take one to two hours depending on traffic.
But for many visitors, that distance is becoming part of the appeal.
Because sometimes the version of Bali people are searching for begins where the crowds start to disappear.
