A man identified by his initials MAA, 27, was filmed climbing across a rooftop and throwing roof tiles at residents chasing him, footage that went viral on social media. It later emerged that the man was fleeing after allegedly attempting to rape a spa therapist identified as FRD, 32, in Denpasar, Bali.
“Witnesses and nearby residents pursued him and eventually managed to apprehend the suspect,” said Denpasar Police public relations chief Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya in a statement on Friday, July 17, 2026.
How the Incident Began
Adi explained that the incident began when MAA arrived at a spa on Jalan Tukad Baru, Denpasar, on Thursday afternoon, July 16. He requested a massage service from FRD and entered the massage room.
After FRD reported the customer’s arrival to the spa owner, she returned to the massage room and found MAA already undressed.
“The suspect, who was already naked, approached the victim. At the time, the victim was sitting near the bathroom,” Adi said.
The Assault
The suspect then pulled the victim toward the bathroom while attempting to remove her clothing. The victim resisted by holding onto the door frame to avoid being dragged inside.
Facing resistance, the suspect struck the victim’s elbow, causing bruising. The victim screamed for help, grabbed nearby objects to throw at the suspect, and splashed him with water from the bathroom.
The suspect attempted to block the victim’s escape until the spa owner opened the door to the room.
“The victim used that opportunity to exit the room, secured herself, and the suspect fled toward the street,” Adi said.
The Rooftop Chase
After fleeing the spa, MAA was pursued by residents to Jalan Pulau Batanta, Denpasar. To evade the chase, he climbed onto a resident’s rooftop and threw roof tiles at the crowd below. Despite his attempts to escape, residents ultimately apprehended him.
“The victim experienced shock and panic as a result of the attempted rape and assault,” Adi said.
The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing questioning at the Denpasar Police Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim).
