GIANYAR, Bali — An unidentified man’s body was discovered Friday afternoon lodged between rocks in the Ayung River, one of Bali’s most popular white-water rafting destinations.
The body was found around 11:00 a.m. local time near the boundary between Ubud in Gianyar Regency and Abiansemal in Badung Regency, according to local authorities.
“He was found in a rigid condition,” said Kopda I Wayan Gede Suardika, a military officer assigned to Bongkasa Pertiwi Village. “At the time of discovery, he was wearing only a pair of short denim jeans and no shirt.”
The man’s identity remains unknown.
Witnesses reported seeing the body trapped among rocks in a section of the river regularly used by rafting operators carrying tourists through Bali’s jungle-lined canyons.
Despite the strong current, the body did not drift downstream because it had become wedged between large rocks.
Police, disaster response officials, and members of the Indonesian Red Cross arrived at the scene shortly after receiving reports from local residents.
Recovery efforts proved challenging due to river conditions. The evacuation was finally carried out at approximately 12:35 p.m., with responders accessing the location through a riverside hotel in Ubud.
Several hotel guests and rafting participants reportedly witnessed the body before it was removed from the river.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding the cause of death, and investigators are continuing efforts to identify the victim.
For now, one question remains unanswered: how an unidentified man ended up among the rocks of Bali’s most famous river.
