Police say they are conducting a thorough, two-track investigation into last week’s fatal mob attack in Tabanan, examining both the alleged chicken theft that triggered the incident and the vigilante violence that followed, while publicly pushing back against unverified claims circulating on social media that suspects in the killing have already been detained.
The incident occurred in Banjar Juwuk Legi, Batunya Village, Baturiti District, Tabanan, at approximately 1am on Friday, July 24, 2026, when a man was caught allegedly stealing chickens and subsequently beaten by a crowd of residents until he died at the scene.
Investigators Examining Both the Theft and the Mob Attack
“Investigators are currently examining two main aspects of this case: the alleged chicken theft, and the mob violence incident that followed it,” said Baturiti Police Sector Chief Kompol Nyoman Darsana on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
Darsana said the investigation is being handled professionally to reconstruct the full sequence of events based on evidence and established facts, with the entire process conducted according to applicable law and guided by principles of professionalism, objectivity, and transparency.
Upon receiving the initial report, officers from Baturiti Police Sector moved quickly to secure the scene, process forensic evidence, and gather witness statements.

Baturiti Police also issued a direct appeal to the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands if they encounter suspected criminal activity in the future.
“The public is urged to report any incident to police immediately so it can be handled through proper legal channels, ensuring public safety and order are maintained,” Darsana said.
Setting the Record Straight on Social Media Rumors
Amid the ongoing investigation, unverified claims have circulated on social media suggesting that suspects connected to the mob attack have already been detained or placed on a wanted persons list. Tabanan Police Criminal Investigation Chief AKP Made Teddy Satria Permana confirmed these claims are false.
“No one has been detained yet. This is still in the investigation stage. Please be patient, as we are still in the process of questioning witnesses,” Teddy said.
Background: A Death That Sparked National Debate
As previously reported, KD, a man from Sidatapa Village, Buleleng, was attacked by a crowd of residents after allegedly being caught stealing chickens in Banjar Juwuk Legi, Batunya Village, Baturiti District, in the early hours of Friday, July 24. He was caught in the act by residents and beaten until he died at the scene. His motorbike was also set on fire during the attack.
