KLUNGKUNG, Bali – In a story that has captured the hearts of Bali’s expatriate and local communities alike, a four-year-old boy who wandered alone onto one of the island’s busiest thoroughfares was saved from certain danger—not by a passerby, but by an unlikely guardian: a German Shepherd who refused to leave his side.
The toddler, identified as Riansa Mori Uma, a native of West Sumba, was reported missing from his family’s home in the Klotok area of Klungkung on Wednesday morning. While his mother, Intan Wada Ridja, was inside the house and his father, Febrianus Mori Uma, was away working in neighboring Bangli regency, the boy slipped out unnoticed and began walking—eventually reaching the bustling Ida Bagus Mantra Bypass, a highway notorious for its heavy traffic.
What happened next has become the stuff of local legend.
A Canine Protector
According to witnesses, Riansa was spotted on the roadside attempting to cross the multilane highway. But before he could step into the path of oncoming vehicles, a German Shepherd—later identified as the family’s landlord’s dog, named Joko—intervened. The dog positioned itself between the child and the road, physically blocking his path and preventing him from stepping into danger.
In its desperate efforts to protect the boy, the dog was clipped by a passing vehicle, witnesses said. Yet, despite the near-miss, the animal remained steadfast, continuing to shield the toddler until help arrived.
“A motorcyclist saw the child and the dog by the roadside and immediately pulled over to secure the boy,” said Iptu I Dewa Nyoman Alit Purnawibawa, public relations officer for the Klungkung Police. The rider, who was on a Yamaha N-Max, took the child to a nearby food stall for safety while other bystanders alerted authorities.

Officers from the Klungkung Police’s integrated service center, along with local precinct personnel and the village’s Bhabinkamtibmas (community policing officer), Aiptu I Wayan Antara, rushed to the scene.
A swift investigation revealed that Riansa had walked a considerable distance from his home, which is located near a catfish farming area in the Tojan village. The German Shepherd, it turned out, had followed him the entire way—silently shadowing the boy from the moment he left the property until they reached the highway.
Police were able to confirm the child’s identity and locate his family, reuniting a tearful mother with her son. Riansa was returned in good health, with no visible injuries—a outcome that officials attribute to the dog’s unwavering protection and the rapid response of the community.

Police have praised the quick-thinking bystanders who reported the incident, emphasizing that their alertness prevented what could have been a fatal tragedy.
“We deeply appreciate the public’s concern and their willingness to act swiftly,” said Iptu Purnawibawa. “Thanks to the cooperation between residents and law enforcement, this child was safely returned to his family.”
Authorities have also issued a reminder to parents—both local and expatriate—to exercise heightened vigilance when it comes to young children, particularly in homes located near major roadways.
