KEDONGANAN, Bali — As the morning sun rises over Kedonganan Beach, hundreds of swimmers stand at the edge of the Indian Ocean, waiting for the starting horn.
The scene feels very different from the Bali most travelers know.
There are no beach clubs, no sunset cocktails, and no influencers searching for the perfect photo. Instead, there are athletes from around the world preparing to test themselves against waves, currents, and distance.
For three days, from June 19 to 21, more than 900 swimmers from 27 countries have gathered in Bali for Oceanman Bali 2026, one of the world’s largest open-water swimming events.
Participants have traveled from Australia, the United States, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, Iceland, the United Arab Emirates, and across Asia, turning a stretch of Bali’s southern coastline into a truly international sporting arena.
But Oceanman represents something bigger than a race.
It offers a glimpse into what Bali’s tourism future could look like.
A Different Kind of Visitor
For decades, Bali’s global image has been built around beaches, culture, wellness retreats, and nightlife.
Oceanman attracts a different audience.
These are travelers willing to fly thousands of kilometers not simply to relax, but to challenge themselves.
Open-water swimming is among the most demanding endurance sports. Unlike a swimming pool, the ocean offers no lane lines, no controlled conditions, and no guarantees. Athletes must navigate waves, tides, currents, and changing weather while relying on both physical fitness and mental resilience.
“I was nervous when I saw the waves,” said Aqila, a participant in the Oceankids category. “But that’s exactly what made it exciting.”
That spirit of adventure is what organizers believe makes Bali a natural fit for international sporting events.

Oceanman Bali is supported by Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, the Bali Provincial Government, Badung Regency, local communities, and tourism stakeholders.
