BADUNG, Bali – A shocking CCTV video showing a woman believed to be a foreign visitor being targeted in a suspected bag-snatching has renewed conversations about personal safety in some of Bali’s busiest tourist corridors.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening, June 28, along Jalan Pantai Bingin in Pecatu, South Kuta, an area known for its boutique hotels, cliffside villas, surf breaks, and growing international visitor community.
Footage circulating on social media shows the woman walking alone along the roadside when a motorcyclist approaches from behind. Within seconds, the rider appears to grab her handbag before speeding away.
The force of the theft causes the woman to lose her balance and fall onto the roadway, while the suspect escapes.
The video quickly spread across Indonesian social media, drawing concern from both local residents and members of Bali’s expatriate community.
Police Launch Investigation
Denpasar Police confirmed that officers from South Kuta Police Station responded shortly after the incident was brought to their attention.
“We immediately deployed officers to the scene to conduct an initial investigation and gather information,” said Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, spokesperson for Denpasar Police.
Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from nearby properties and collecting witness statements in an effort to identify the suspect.
Victim Has Not Yet Filed a Police Report
Despite the video’s widespread circulation, police say no official report has yet been filed by the victim.
As a result, investigators have not been able to confirm the woman’s identity or nationality, and many details surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
Authorities are urging the victim—or anyone who witnessed the incident—to contact South Kuta Police or the nearest police station to assist the investigation.
Police stressed that all conclusions will be based on evidence collected during the investigation rather than information circulating online.
A Reminder for Visitors
While violent crime remains relatively uncommon in Bali compared with many international tourism destinations, opportunistic theft—particularly bag snatching involving motorcycles—has occurred in several popular visitor areas over the years.
Police advise both residents and visitors to remain aware of their surroundings, avoid walking close to the roadside while carrying handbags or mobile phones on the traffic side, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
For Bali’s tourism industry, incidents like this serve as a reminder that visitor confidence depends not only on beautiful beaches and world-class hospitality, but also on visible public safety and swift law enforcement responses.
As investigators continue reviewing evidence, authorities hope the victim will come forward, allowing the case to move beyond a viral video and into a formal criminal investigation.
For expats and visitors: If you witness a crime or become a victim while in Bali, report the incident to the nearest police station as soon as possible. Prompt reporting significantly improves investigators’ ability to collect evidence, review surveillance footage, and identify suspects.
