BADUNG, Bali — A 49-year-old Dutch national was fatally stabbed outside his villa in Bali’s Kerobokan area late Monday night, in a violent attack that police say involved two unidentified assailants and no apparent robbery.
The killing, which unfolded over the course of less than an hour, has left investigators searching for answers—and for a motive that remains unclear.
A Night Walk That Turned Fatal
The victim, identified by his initials RP, had been walking with his partner near their villa in Banjar Anyar Kelod, North Kuta, when they encountered two men riding a motorcycle.
According to police, the encounter initially appeared incidental. But something about the pair raised alarm.
Sensing danger, RP instructed his partner, identified as PI, 30, to return to the villa and secure the door.
Moments later, the situation escalated.
The two men turned back.
They approached.
And then, without warning, they attacked.

A Coordinated Assault
Police say the attackers—one wearing a ride-hailing jacket, a black helmet, and a blue mask, the other dressed in an orange shirt without a helmet—targeted the victim with a knife in what appeared to be a deliberate assault.
As PI fled toward the villa, one of the suspects pursued her, entering the property in an apparent attempt to locate her.
Unable to find her in the dark, he returned to the street.
By then, the attack on RP was underway.
The victim was stabbed repeatedly.
From a hiding place near a neighboring villa, PI could only watch as the assault continued before the two men fled toward the main road.
Witnesses Heard, But Did Not Intervene
Residents in the area reported hearing cries for help, but few approached.
The street was poorly lit. The attackers were armed.
By the time anyone reached the scene, the suspects had already disappeared.
Severe Injuries, No Chance of Survival
RP was found with multiple deep wounds across his face, neck, shoulders, arms, and back—injuries that investigators say were consistent with a sustained knife attack.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but the damage was too severe.
He was pronounced dead at approximately 11:29 p.m., with police citing significant blood loss as the cause.
No Signs of Robbery
What investigators did not find may be as important as what they did.
The victim’s belongings—including his phone, glasses, and personal items—were still at the scene, untouched.
For police, that detail immediately ruled out robbery as a primary motive.
Instead, the focus has shifted to other possibilities, including targeted violence or a planned attack.

Clues Left Behind
At the scene, investigators recovered several pieces of evidence that may prove critical.
Among them: a broken knife blade found near the victim’s body, fragments of a flashlight scattered on the ground, and the victim’s intact personal belongings.
CCTV footage has also become a central part of the investigation. Police say the two suspects were seen moving around the area prior to the attack, suggesting a level of intent that goes beyond a chance encounter.
A Search for Answers—and Suspects
Authorities from Bali Police, Badung Police, and North Kuta Police have launched a joint investigation and are actively pursuing the two men believed to be responsible.
“We are currently tracking two suspects who were captured on CCTV moving around the area before the incident,” police said.
Witnesses, including the victim’s partner, have been questioned as part of the ongoing inquiry.
A Short Stay, A Violent End
According to local residents, RP had only been staying at the villa for less than two weeks, having moved in around March 11.
He was described as living alone and keeping a low profile.
There were no immediate indications of prior conflict or disturbance.

An Unanswered Question
The attack was swift. The violence, severe. The execution, coordinated.
But the motive remains unclear.
There was no theft. No obvious provocation. No immediate explanation for why the victim was targeted.
For investigators, that absence has become the central focus of the case.
For the community, it raises a more unsettling question.
Not just how the attack happened—but why.
