KUTA, Bali — What began as a job search through Tinder ended with allegations of violence, extortion, and confinement at a Bali hotel, in a case that serves as a stark reminder of how online platforms can be exploited by criminals targeting vulnerable job seekers.
Police in Bali have confirmed they are investigating reports from a 24-year-old man from East Nusa Tenggara who says he was lured through the dating app Tinder with the promise of employment before being assaulted and pressured to hand over large sums of money.
The case gained attention after images showing the victim with injuries to his head and face circulated widely on social media.
According to Denpasar Police spokesperson Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, the report is being handled by Kuta Police and remains under investigation.
A Job Opportunity That Never Existed?
The alleged victim, identified by the initials YKB, told police he traveled to Bali in search of work and discovered what appeared to be a tourism-sector job opportunity through Tinder.
He said he was invited to attend what was presented as a job interview at a hotel in the Seminyak area.
According to his account, he was offered a position as either a personal assistant or villa manager and was later informed that he had been accepted.
The opportunity appeared legitimate.
The people involved spoke English fluently, discussed tourism-related business projects, and presented themselves as experienced professionals, the victim told investigators.
But police say the situation allegedly changed after he arrived.
From Recruitment to Alleged Extortion
According to the victim’s statement, he was later accused of theft and inappropriate conduct by individuals he had met through the platform.
He claims his mobile phones, laptop, passport, and identification documents were taken.
Police say the victim further alleges that he was pressured to provide money and that demands eventually escalated to Rp100 million (approximately US$6,000).
When he was unable to pay, he claims he was physically assaulted by multiple individuals.
Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects, and investigators have not yet released details regarding the identities of those involved.
Escape and Rescue
The victim eventually escaped from a hotel in the Kedonganan area, according to statements provided to police.
A local food stall owner later helped him seek medical treatment and contact authorities.
Police confirmed that when officers responded to the report, the individuals accused by the victim were no longer at the location.
The investigation remains ongoing.
