BADUNG, Bali — Police have reconstructed the final moments of a Dutch tourist killed in Bali—and the details point not to a random act of violence, but to what investigators increasingly believe was a targeted attack.

The victim, identified as 49-year-old Dutch national Rene Pouw, was fatally stabbed outside a villa in Kerobokan on the night of March 23, 2026.

What has emerged from official police findings and witness accounts is a sequence of events that unfolded with precision—and left little doubt about the level of intent involved.

A Suspicious Presence Before the Attack

According to investigators, the timeline began nearly an hour before the killing.

At around 10:00 PM, Pouw and his partner left their residence at Villa Amira No. 3 for a walk. As they passed Villa Amira No. 1, they noticed two men on a black automatic motorcycle behaving unusually.

The driver was wearing a black-and-green ride-hailing jacket, a black helmet, and a blue face mask. The passenger wore an orange T-shirt and no helmet.

The motorcycle continued to the end of the alley—then turned around.

Moments later, they came back.

The Attack: Fast, Violent, and Relentless

At approximately 10:50 PM, the situation escalated.

Pouw stopped and asked his partner to lock the villa. Within moments, the two men returned and launched a knife attack.

His partner was chased by one of the suspects and fled into a darkened area near another villa. From her hiding place, she witnessed something that would later shape the investigation:

one of the attackers briefly entered the victim’s villa—apparently searching for her—before returning to continue the assault on Pouw.

The violence did not stop quickly.

It continued until the attackers fled.

Severe Wounds Across the Body

By the time help arrived, the victim had sustained extensive injuries.

Police documentation shows multiple lacerations across critical areas of the body, including:

  • a deep open wound to the left cheek extending toward the ear
  • injuries to the head, neck, shoulder, and arms
  • wounds to the back and lower thigh
  • cuts to the hands consistent with defensive movement

He was transported to BIMC Hospital but arrived unconscious and in critical condition.

Despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at 11:29 PM.

The likely cause of death: massive blood loss from multiple stab wounds.

No Theft, No Signs of Robbery

One of the most decisive findings came from the scene itself.

Investigators confirmed that the victim’s belongings—including his phone, glasses, and other personal items—were left untouched.

There were no signs of theft.

This detail has shifted the investigation significantly.

Police are now treating the case as serious assault leading to death, with strong indications of premeditation, rather than a robbery gone wrong.

Evidence and the Challenge of Limited CCTV

At the crime scene, police recovered:

  • a detached knife blade found in a pool of blood
  • personal belongings of the victim
  • multiple small items, including footwear and a flashlight component

However, one key limitation remains:

There were no CCTV cameras directly at the villa.

Investigators are now relying on cameras located at the entrance of the alley and surrounding streets to track the suspects’ movements and escape route.

A Pattern That Suggests Planning

The reconstructed timeline reveals a pattern that investigators are now focusing on:

  • the suspects were present before the victim arrived
  • they circled the area
  • they returned to carry out the attack
  • they attempted to locate a second individual
  • they fled immediately after

This sequence points to more than a spontaneous act.

It suggests surveillance, intent, and coordination.

The Manhunt Continues

Police in Badung are continuing to:

  • analyze CCTV footage across multiple locations
  • track the suspects’ motorcycle route
  • collect further witness testimony
  • coordinate with the victim’s family
  • expand the investigation to identify the perpetrators

The two suspects remain at large.

Their identities—and possible motive—are still unknown.

A Case That Raises Bigger Questions

The killing of a foreign national in one of Bali’s busiest residential areas is already drawing attention beyond the immediate investigation.

While violent crime remains rare on the island, cases involving targeted attacks—particularly those showing signs of planning—carry wider implications for safety perception.

For Bali’s international community, the case is not just about what happened.

It is about understanding why.

The Bottom Line

The facts are becoming clearer:

Two men.
A waiting position.
A coordinated attack.
No robbery.

What remains unresolved is the most critical question of all:

Who—and why?

Hey Bali News will continue to follow this case as new details emerge.

  • A viral video posted on December 20, 2025, has drawn renewed attention to street safety in one of Bali’s most popular areas. The footage shows a Russian national targeted in a daylight snatch attempt while walking through Canggu. Captured on CCTV and followed by the victim’s own emotional recording, the video documents the moment a motorcycle rider approached from behind and attempted to grab her phone. The attempt failed when the device slipped and shattered on the road, but the impact went far beyond physical damage. In her follow-up video, the victim appears visibly shaken, saying she no longer feels safe walking in Bali. While her phone was not stolen, the psychological toll was immediate and profound. The incident has since sparked intense discussion among tourists, expats, and long-term residents about pedestrian safety in areas long perceived as vibrant and secure. Canggu has become a global hub for digital nomads and travelers, but rapid growth, congestion, and crowded streets have also created new challenges. This incident serves as a reminder that public safety remains a shared responsibility, and that trust in a destination is built not only on beauty and culture, but on how safe people feel in their daily movements. 🔗 Full story:
