KODI, East Nusa Tenggara — Indonesian police have arrested a 17-year-old student following the alleged sexual assault, attempted rape, and robbery of an Australian tourist on a remote beach in Sumba, a case that has raised renewed concerns about traveler safety in one of Indonesia’s fastest-growing tourism destinations.
The incident occurred on June 19 at Pailiang Beach, a secluded stretch of coastline in Southwest Sumba known for its rugged scenery and powerful surf.
Police identified the victim only by her initials, IMC, a 30-year-old Australian visitor from Sydney.
Sunrise Visit Turned Into a Violent Attack
According to investigators, the woman was watching the sunrise alone when the suspect approached while leading a horse.
Police allege the teenager suddenly attacked the victim before attempting to sexually assault her. During the struggle, he allegedly forced her head into seawater several times, making it difficult for her to breathe.
“The victim struggled to free herself while the suspect repeatedly pushed her head into the water,” said First Inspector Yakobus Sanam, Head of Criminal Investigation at Southwest Sumba Police.
Investigators also allege that the suspect attempted to drag the woman toward nearby bushes.
Fearing for her safety, the victim reportedly offered her belongings, including her iPhone 14 Pro and cash, hoping to stop the attack.
Police said the suspect allegedly seized the phone but continued the assault before the victim managed to escape.
She ran back to her nearby accommodation, where hotel staff immediately assisted her and helped her report the incident to authorities.
Police Investigation Underway
The victim formally reported the incident on June 22.
Police have since arrested the teenage suspect, who remains in custody while investigators continue gathering evidence.
Authorities confirmed they have seized several items connected to the investigation, including clothing and the victim’s damaged iPhone 14 Pro.
A forensic medical examination has also been completed, while detectives continue interviewing witnesses who were in the area.
Police have not disclosed whether prosecutors will pursue the case under Indonesia’s juvenile justice system or request alternative legal proceedings due to the seriousness of the allegations.
The investigation remains ongoing.

The incident comes as Sumba continues to attract international attention as an emerging destination for travelers seeking quieter alternatives to Bali.
Known for its untouched beaches, luxury eco-resorts, traditional villages, and world-class surf breaks, the island has experienced steady growth in international tourism over the past several years.
While violent crimes involving foreign visitors remain relatively uncommon, the case highlights the additional challenges that can arise in remote destinations where emergency response times, transportation, and security resources may be more limited than in Indonesia’s larger tourism centers.

Travel safety experts generally recommend avoiding isolated beaches alone during early morning or late evening hours, particularly in unfamiliar areas where few other people are present.
Visitors exploring remote destinations are also encouraged to share their travel plans with accommodation staff or companions, carry a charged mobile phone, and remain aware of local conditions before venturing into secluded locations.

Police say the investigation is continuing, and additional information will be released as the legal process moves forward.
