Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism has officially designated Jakarta and Bali as pilot regions for developing a national wellness tourism ecosystem, a move aimed at capturing a fast-growing global travel trend increasingly centered on health, mindfulness, and physical wellbeing rather than sightseeing alone.
According to Antara News on Monday, July 27, 2026, Tourism Ministry spokesperson Nia Niscaya confirmed that Jakarta and Bali will serve as the country’s central testing grounds for wellness tourism development.
Why These Two Destinations Were Chosen
Niscaya said Jakarta and Bali were selected because both already possess the infrastructure needed to support the initiative, from accommodations and healthcare services to fitness centers and a range of activities aligned with healthy lifestyles.
“We’ve designated Jakarta and Bali as the initial focus areas for developing a wellness tourism ecosystem in 2026-2027 because both have the highest level of industry readiness and characteristics that complement each other,” Niscaya said.
The Ministry views wellness tourism as holding significant potential precisely because it offers more than a typical holiday experience, delivering tangible physical, mental, and emotional health benefits to travelers, a value proposition increasingly sought after in global tourism markets.
What the Concept Actually Covers
Wellness tourism, as defined under this initiative, spans a broad range of activities: spa treatments, yoga, meditation, traditional healing therapies, healthy nutrition, and nature-integrated wellness experiences. The category has grown steadily worldwide as public awareness around healthy living continues to rise.
Jakarta’s selection reflects its comprehensive infrastructure, strong transportation access, and international-standard medical facilities and fitness centers. Bali, meanwhile, has long held global recognition as a wellness destination in its own right, built on its established spa culture, yoga retreat industry, holistic therapy offerings, and a natural and cultural landscape uniquely suited to relaxation-focused travel. Together, officials believe this combination provides a strong foundation for building out a formal wellness tourism ecosystem.
A Coordinated, Multi-Sector Approach
The Ministry says it will work with a range of stakeholders in developing the initiative, including local governments, tourism industry players, community groups, and the healthcare sector. This collaboration is intended to produce wellness tourism services that meet international quality standards while incorporating Indonesian local wisdom as a distinguishing value for both domestic and international travelers.
The Economic Case for Wellness Tourism
Beyond health benefits, the Ministry sees wellness tourism as a meaningful driver of economic value within the broader tourism sector. Travelers visiting specifically for wellness-focused services typically stay longer and spend more than conventional tourists, a pattern well-documented in wellness tourism markets globally.
Through the Jakarta and Bali pilot projects, the Ministry hopes to develop a replicable model that can eventually be applied to other Indonesian destinations with similar potential, strengthening Indonesia’s broader position as a leading wellness tourism destination across Asia.
Why This Matters for Bali’s Wellness Industry and Its International Visitors
For Bali’s already-thriving wellness sector, yoga studios in Ubud, holistic retreats across the island, and a long-established reputation among international travelers seeking mindful, health-focused getaways, this designation represents formal government recognition and investment in an industry the island has effectively been building organically for years. For travelers and expats already drawn to Bali specifically for its wellness offerings, the initiative signals continued government support for infrastructure, quality standards, and potentially new wellness-focused developments in the years ahead, reinforcing Bali’s position not just as a beach destination, but as one of the world’s genuine wellness travel capitals.
