One of North Bali’s most distinctive cultural traditions is set to make its biggest splash yet, with a record 1,230 competitors registering for the Mini Sailboat Race at Lovina Festival 2026, nearly doubling participation from the same event held earlier this year.
The remarkable turnout reflects growing public enthusiasm for the annual festival, which local officials hope will strengthen Lovina’s reputation as one of Bali’s most compelling alternatives to the island’s crowded southern tourism hotspots.
Running from July 24 to 28, Lovina Festival forms part of Indonesia’s Kharisma Event Nusantara (KEN) 2026, the national calendar of flagship tourism events designed to promote regional destinations across the archipelago.
A Local Tradition Drawing National Attention
According to Buleleng Regent I Nyoman Sutjidra, this year’s mini sailboat competition has attracted participants not only from across Bali but also from neighboring Banyuwangi in East Java, highlighting the event’s growing appeal beyond the island.
“This is extraordinary. Participation has nearly doubled, reaching 1,230 competitors,” Sutjidra said after a final coordination meeting for the festival on Tuesday.
The figure represents a dramatic increase from the 680 participants who joined a similar competition during Singaraja City’s anniversary celebrations earlier this year.
More Than Just a Race
Although the colorful miniature sailboats are small in size, the event has become one of Lovina Festival’s signature attractions, combining friendly competition with a celebration of coastal traditions that have long shaped life in North Bali.
For visitors, the race offers an opportunity to witness a uniquely local spectacle rarely found in mainstream travel itineraries, as hundreds of handcrafted sailboats fill the shoreline while families, residents and tourists gather along Lovina Beach.
Officials have instructed organizers to carefully prepare every technical aspect of the competition, from race scheduling and wind conditions to course layout, to ensure a smooth experience for participants.
“We want to make sure everything is properly prepared so participants have no reason to complain, including the timing, wind conditions and race course,” Sutjidra said.
Festival Expands Beyond the Beach
The surge in registrations has prompted the Buleleng administration to prepare special surprises for participants in addition to the prizes already offered by organizers, as a gesture of appreciation for the overwhelming response.
The mini sailboat race is only one of several highlights planned for Lovina Festival 2026.
Visitors can also experience the Lovina Run, cross-country races, the traditional Gerumbungan Bull Race, Balinese cultural performances, local culinary experiences and evening contemporary music concerts throughout the five-day celebration.
