HEYBALI – A video showing a gym owner in Ubud ordering three Israeli nationals to leave his facility has spread rapidly across social media this week, reviving a familiar but unresolved question for Bali’s expat and tourism community: where does a business owner’s right to refuse service end, and where does discrimination begin.
The footage, posted to the Instagram account @GAZAUPDATE, shows the owner of Ayenda gym in an increasingly tense exchange with one of the men before demanding all three leave the premises.
A Confrontation Built Around One Specific Question
What sets this incident apart from more generic disputes over refused service is the exact wording used by the gym owner, identified as 32-year-old Samir. Rather than referencing nationality alone, he directed his objection specifically at military service.
“Are you serving in the IDF? So I won’t discuss it. You’re not even allowed to be in this country. And be grateful, because I’m not involving the police,” Samir says in the video.
It is worth noting that the claim of IDF service rests entirely on what the men reportedly told Samir themselves, according to his account. No document, uniform, or third-party verification has been cited, and no authority has confirmed the men’s military background as of this writing.
The Gym Owner’s Side of the Story
Following the video’s spread online, Samir posted a follow-up clip offering his account of how the confrontation began. He said the three men entered his gym and that one of them was rude toward staff.
“When I asked, they said they were Israeli. So I said we don’t serve Israelis. We also don’t serve anyone who is rude to our staff. You have to respect the local people who work hard,” Samir said in his clarification video.

A One-Star Review Sparks a Second Round of Dispute
According to Samir, the three men left one-star reviews on Google shortly after being asked to leave, accusing him of racism and claiming the refusal was religiously motivated.
Samir rejected that characterization directly. “I said it was about Israelis and the IDF, not about religion. But they keep framing it as a religious issue. Luckily we recorded everything, because I knew they would lie,” he said.
He went on to state his position plainly for future customers. “I want to be very clear. Do not serve IDF members, or anyone who is rude to our staff,” he said.
Local Police Say Verification Is Still Underway
As of publication, no immigration authority has issued a statement addressing the video or the disputed IDF claim. Gianyar Police public relations officer Iptu I Gusti Ngurah Suardita said only that the department intends to confirm the details of the incident before commenting further.
“We’re confirming it first,” he said.
The episode adds to an ongoing conversation in Bali’s international community about where personal political stances intersect with running a public-facing business, a tension that, once captured on camera, tends to spread far beyond the walls of any single gym.
