A late-night argument between two Bruneian nationals in a busy Jakarta neighborhood turned deadly earlier this month. One man is dead. The other, a social media influencer known as Woodyrman, has been arrested.
The incident occurred in the Blok M area of South Jakarta at approximately 3:30 AM on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The victim, identified only as MHF (30), was sitting in the area when he was approached by several individuals. A video circulating online shows the victim and the suspect, Mohamad Irman Ali (33), engaged in a heated exchange.
The argument continued even as bystanders tried to intervene. Then, Ali struck the victim with a glass bottle. The victim collapsed.
He was rushed to a hospital. He died ten days later, on May 16, at RSPP Hospital in Jakarta.
The Suspect
Ali, better known to his social media followers as Woodyrman, was arrested in the early hours of Monday, May 25, in the Kebayoran Lama area of South Jakarta. He has been named a suspect and is currently detained at the Metro Jaya Police Headquarters.
“He has been named a suspect and is in detention,” said Kompol Dimitri Mahendra, head of unit 1 of the Mobile Crime Subdirectorate at the Metro Jaya Police, on Wednesday, May 27.
Ali has been charged under articles 466 paragraph 3 and 468 paragraph 2 of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP). The charges relate to assault resulting in death.
What Happened That Night
Police have confirmed that Ali was intoxicated at the time of the assault. Whether the victim was also under the influence remains under investigation, pending medical records.
“The perpetrator was drunk,” Dimitri said. “For the victim, we are still waiting for medical records to determine if he was also drunk.”
The two men knew each other. They were friends, according to police.
“The victim and the perpetrator knew each other. They were friends,” Dimitri said.
So what triggered the violence?
Ali, police said, was annoyed because the victim had reprimanded him.
“He was upset because he was reprimanded,” Dimitri said. “Further details will be released during a press conference.”
No specifics have yet been provided about what the reprimand concerned or why it escalated into a fatal assault with a glass bottle.
What This Means for Travelers
For expats and tourists in Bali, the case is a reminder that Indonesia’s legal system treats acts of violence — even those occurring between foreign nationals — with full seriousness.
Ali is a public figure. He has a social media following. That did not protect him from arrest, detention, or criminal charges.
The victim was also a foreign national. That did not make his death less consequential in the eyes of Indonesian law.
Alcohol fueled the argument. A glass bottle became a weapon. Ten days later, a man was dead.
Indonesian police are continuing their investigation. A full press conference is expected in the coming days. Until then, the exact motive remains unclear.
But the outcome is already certain: one man is dead. Another is in custody. And a late-night argument in a Jakarta neighborhood has changed two lives forever.
