BADUNG, Bali — Indonesian police are investigating whether a hidden connection lies behind the fatal stabbing of a Dutch national in Bali, as a case marked by sudden violence and the absence of a clear motive continues to unfold.

Nearly three days after the attack, authorities say they have yet to establish any link between the victim and the two men believed to be responsible.

“We have not found any relationship or connection between the victim and the suspected perpetrators,” said Badung Police Chief Joseph Edward Purba on Wednesday. “We are still exploring that. At this point, we cannot conclude the motive.”

The Ripple Effect: How a War Far Away Is Emptying Bali’s Most Iconic Temple

A Crime Without Context

The uncertainty surrounding the case has become its defining feature.

Investigators have found no evidence of prior conflict, no indication of a dispute, and no immediate explanation for why the victim—a 49-year-old Dutch national identified as RP—was attacked outside his villa in the Kerobokan area of North Kuta.

Police are now focusing on the victim’s inner circle, particularly his partner, who witnessed the attack and is considered a key source of information.

“The investigation is ongoing,” Purba said. “We are examining witness testimony and CCTV evidence, including whether there was any interaction between the victim and the perpetrators before the attack.”

Reconstructing a Life in Bali

Authorities are also working to understand who the victim was—and what his life in Bali may reveal.

Immigration records show that he had traveled in and out of the island since 2022 before settling more permanently in 2024. Police say he was involved in several business ventures, though the nature of those activities is still under review.

“We are still examining whether his businesses were related to property or other sectors,” Purba said.

The inquiry reflects a broader strategy: to determine whether the motive lies not at the crime scene, but in the victim’s background.

The Moments Before the Attack

On the night of the killing, the victim had stepped out of his villa with his partner, walking along the narrow lane while handling routine tasks.

They were accompanied by two dogs.

At one point, the victim walked toward the end of the lane to check an electricity meter before turning back toward the villa.

It was then, police say, that the attack occurred.

Investigators believe the suspects may have been monitoring the victim’s movements beforehand. Early findings suggest the two men entered the area, rode toward the end of the lane, and then turned back—positioning themselves at a point where the victim would pass.

The assault that followed was swift.

No Warning Signs

The victim’s partner, who had been living with him for only a few days prior to the incident, told police there had been no signs of conflict or threat in the days leading up to the attack.

“There were no indications of any problems,” Purba said. “No disputes on the road, no issues at nightlife venues—nothing that suggested this would happen.”

For investigators, that absence of warning has made the case more complex.

“This was unpredictable,” he added.

An Expanding Investigation

As police continue to analyze CCTV footage and gather witness statements, the case remains open on multiple fronts.

Was the victim targeted—or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Was the attack planned, or opportunistic?

And most critically, what connects the victim to the two men who carried it out—if anything at all?

For now, there are no clear answers.

Only a growing investigation, and a crime that, despite its violence, remains without context.

  • A viral video posted on December 20, 2025, has drawn renewed attention to street safety in one of Bali’s most popular areas. The footage shows a Russian national targeted in a daylight snatch attempt while walking through Canggu. Captured on CCTV and followed by the victim’s own emotional recording, the video documents the moment a motorcycle rider approached from behind and attempted to grab her phone. The attempt failed when the device slipped and shattered on the road, but the impact went far beyond physical damage. In her follow-up video, the victim appears visibly shaken, saying she no longer feels safe walking in Bali. While her phone was not stolen, the psychological toll was immediate and profound. The incident has since sparked intense discussion among tourists, expats, and long-term residents about pedestrian safety in areas long perceived as vibrant and secure. Canggu has become a global hub for digital nomads and travelers, but rapid growth, congestion, and crowded streets have also created new challenges. This incident serves as a reminder that public safety remains a shared responsibility, and that trust in a destination is built not only on beauty and culture, but on how safe people feel in their daily movements. 🔗 Full story:
